What inspires you to create?
I have several motivations to create my stories. Firstly, I learned, after my my father’s passing that he had aspirations to become a comic artist which went unfulfilled. Thus, I try to complete a form of “legacy” which never came to fruition in that regard. Additionally, I enjoy giving life to the characters I have created and, in conjunction with that, I enjoy telling a good story. Thus, I want my fans to be entertained and I want to give them a good reading experience. Unlocking the “theater of the mind.”
What’s your creative process?
I try to think out the adventure and run it in my mind again and again until the plot presents itself. I then draw it out as scenes. You see, I want it to be like living a life. Life is made of scenes which play out through the day, with overarching goals being sewn together with short-term ones while the predictable and unpredictable foibles of life come crashing against the Shores of our life.
My actual art process is to draw the line drawings on paper in the traditional sense and then scan or photo these into a digital format. I like to use “layering,” drawing backgrounds and superimposing “elements” and coloring them digitally. Occasionally, I will draw out the entire scene, especially if it is to be a splash page.
Tools of the trade:
I use various styles of pens, from the “dollar store” variety to fine art pens and brushes. Rulers, French curves, shape templates and the compass are regular implements. I use a really old Adobe Photoshop, 3.0 to be exact, to combine and color the art and Microsoft Publisher to format the pages. I am open to new tools and applications and plan to augment or replace these early methods as I learn more from the Small Press and Indie Comics community.
