What inspires you to create?

That’s a tough question. I tend to just create for the sake of it. There is something special about holding that finished product in your hands.

What’s your creative process?

It changes a bit from project to project. For my own projects I don’t usually write a script anymore and “write” by thumbnailing the story on folded 8.5×11” paper. I then pencil the art on an 11×17” bristol board.  Sometimes I ink the pages traditionally and then scan them and edit the inks in Clip Studio. I’ve been moving more and more to digital inking with a graphics tablet lately so I will scan my pencils in the GIMP, then ink the page in Clip Studio Paint. I color in Clip Studio for the most part, but some programs like Krita and Corel Paint have unique abilities, so I’ll go back and forth between programs if needed. For lettering I’ve started using Affinity Designer, but really love Inkscape as well. I’ll finish up laying out the book in Affinity Publisher and format it accordingly.

For my Sunday Jam page I went a bit of a different route and started by thumbnailing the page on folded 8.5×11” paper. I scanned that in and inked the first panel directly in Clip Studio from that. I didn’t like my original panel 2 so I drew a new image in pencil on copy paper then scanned it in and inked it in Clip Studio then drew the final panel directly on the computer. I then colored it in Clip Studio and exported it out to Affinity Designer and lettered it.
