What inspires you to create?
Life, people, things and ideas. I’ve usually got some story or idea floating around in my head. I’m a visual person, so often it’s something I’ve seen that pushes me in a direction, but a good word prompt or rough story idea can get me started too.
What’s your creative process?
When writing or crafting a story I work out the basics in my head. Getting to the specifics requires paper and pencil or tablet/computer and keyboard. If I’m stuck, I doodle to solidify ideas or push them in new directions. I usually have a good idea where I’m headed with a story, but the journey often takes a twisted path. When it comes to cartooning, I sketch a lot and try to look for unexpected ideas or twists.
Tools of the trade:
I’m an old guy, who grew up using traditional pencil and ink (pen and brush) on Bristol board, so it surprises me to say that when I retired I bought a used iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, downloaded Adobe Fresco and ProCreate, and I’m now doing much of my work digitally.
