What inspires you to create?
I’ve always enjoyed telling stories… and I like surprising people with them. I’ve always loved the cinematic visual storytelling of movies and television… Comics are as close as I can get to creating those kinds of experiences (at least at this point).
What’s your creative process?
- Story first! Usually. Most of my stories deal with some level of irony, so how the story plays out is the most important thing. I’ll take a few passes at the script before I’m comfortable with it.. If time permits and it’s a big enough endeavor, I might spend time doing character sheets and technical drawings… otherwise, I might cut corners and design in-panel.
- I’ve also recently started sending previews to friends for feedback and proofreading.
- And finally, if I’m working on science fiction, I tend to try to keep it physically accurate, so I’ll consult a couple of astrophysicist friends as well as my father (who is also an astrophysicist) for guidance as I’m fleshing out the story.
Tools of the trade:
- My computer. Most of my writing is done in Google Sheets, these days.
- My sketchbook and lead holder for when I need to do some loose ideating and design work.
- My iPad for when I want to do some more finished sketches and design work. Also used for putting books together, using Clip Studio Pro.
- Photoshop and Illustrator are used as needed for post-processing, layout, and graphic design work.
