Terry Flippo is one of the best cartoonists in the small press. That’s just a fact. I’ve been a fan of his artwork and storytelling since reading Axel and Alex way back in the ’90s. He’s got a unique style all his own, and his sense of humor is perfection. And “Marbles” is a perfect showcase for all of it.

It’s so fun to see Terry’s renditions of all the mainstream characters we know and love in his own unique style, and it’s very clear he has a deep affection for all of them. This book is an absolute must for comic book fans. Every page is a hilarious send-up of all our favorites, and what’s great about Terry is that he’s got an encyclopedic knowledge of Marvel and DC lore. So there are some pretty deep cuts in here. There’s no other book you’re going to read that’s going to have Killraven AND Machine Man jokes in one place.

And what’s arguably the coolest part of this book is what’s on the back cover. There’s a 3.5×3.5 inch square where Terry draws a personalized sketch just for you! I’ve lost track of how many copies of this book I’ve ordered from Terry strictly for that amazing feature because I’m handing them out like candy to nieces, nephews and friends’ kids as personalized birthday gifts. It’s an unbelievably cool gift to get for any budding comic book geek in your life. And the best part of giving a book as a present is you can read it and enjoy it before you wrap it up.
