Jason‘s thoughts:
I ordered this one based on a recommendation from Tony Lawrence, who’s a helluva great artist, so I figured if he liked it, there was a good chance I would, too. Glad to say he didn’t steer me wrong.
Small press anthologies are always tricky. They can be a bit of a mixed bag, which I guess is the point of them, but many times they’ll leave you feeling a little unfulfilled. I’m happy to say that was not the case with this particular volume.
As with any great anthology I’ve ever read, it left me wanting to see more by all the artists, but what set this one apart from a lot of anthologies I’ve read is that this one is so well-crafted.
It’s printed on high-quality paper, for one. And it’s beautifully curated as well. The first several pages are devoted to little mini-bios of all the contributors, accompanied by illustrations based off their bios (I think my favorite was the beef rice bowl playing video games). This set the tone that there was a strong respect for each of the artists; that continued throughout the book, where the artists were very clearly identified next to their work. As I’m writing this, I’m realizing reading the book was a bit like walking through a well-curated art gallery.
The cost is a little high, particularly if you’re getting it shipped across the pond (it’s produced in the UK), but the majority of the money is going to the artists, and it’s such a well-produced book that it’s worth the money. If you’re a small press fan, this book will definitely add some class to your collection.
