Jason‘s thoughts:
I’ve been sitting here trying to write some kind of profound intro to this review, but there’s nothing I could write that could really do justice to Micah Liesenfeld’s heartwrenching saga. I’ve been fortunate enough to read the first two issues of “A-T Walker”, and I can’t say enough how good it is. I’m so impressed by the fortitude of Micah and his family as they try to figure out what’s wrong with his little girl. And I can’t even imagine the additional emotional fortitude it took for Micah to then relive all these experiences by creating these comics.
I feel like I know Micah and his family personally because he has done such a tremendous job of storytelling in this series. The narrative pulls you immediately in, and his artwork and pacing very quickly immerse you into the drama that plays out as Micah and his wife are in and out of the hospital with their little baby girl. There were so many times as I was reading it that I reacted out loud on what I was reading, something I rarely do, because the story is just such a gut punch of emotion.
I’ve read some amazing small press auto-bio comics over the years, including Tim Kelly’s wonderful “Summer of Nove” and Jerry Smith’s amazing “Southern Fried”. This is on par with those fantastic works, and I would not be surprised if we see the collected edition of this series get picked up by a bigger publisher. I cannot stress enough how good this series is. Highly, highly recommend getting your hands on this both to appreciate a truly talented small presser and to support him and his family at the same time.
